Our Winemaker—Derek Holstein

Derek Holstein has been Cache Creek Vineyards & Winery’s winemaker since our first vintage in 2005. With Derek’s skill and guidance, Cache Creek has produced vintage after vintage of award-winning wines that we proudly share in our tasting room.

Derek works closely with Don Van Pelt and Tony Medina, our vineyard foreman, as we refine our sustainable farming practices and strive to continuously produce premium quality grapes.

Winemaking Philosophy

Derek, a man of many talents, is a musician as well as a winemaker. His view of winemaking reflects the range of his artistic interests.

“Fine wine is an art form for me, lending me the privilege of creative expression. It enriches and inspires my life, and I endeavor to spread that inspiration from farm to table,” says Derek.

Derek compares his winemaker role to that of an orchestra conductor. He works with every member of our team (his orchestra). He is actively involved in the vineyard practices not just during harvest, but throughout the year. In the cellar, under Derek’s guidance, the winemaking team produces harmonious compositions year after year.

Career Path

Derek has a long career as a winemaker, and is well regarded for his decades of producing stellar wines. Derek started his career working for renowned Napa Valley wineries—Trinchero Family Estates, Domaine Chandon and Christian Brothers. In 1987, Derek transitioned to Lake County, where he worked for more than a decade for Guenoc Winery, one of Lake County’s pioneering brands. During his years at Guenoc, Derek was instrumental in increasing awareness for Lake County grapes as his winemaking repeatedly won Gold Medals and garnered scores in the 90s.

In 2006, Derek launched his winemaking consulting company. His client list includes Beckstoffer Vineyards, The Girls in the Vineyard, Harris Tesla Vineyards, Quercus Vineyards, and of course, Cache Creek Vineyards and Winery.
